Frequently Asked Questions
Are medical procedures performed at the Gastroenterology Center or at Salem Regional Medical Center? All colonoscopies and endoscopic procedures are performed in the Endoscopy department at Salem Regional Medical Center.
Will I be put to sleep during my procedure?Yes, anesthesia is required for all procedures. Anesthesia does not induce a deep sleep, only a light sleep to ensure patient comfort.
How do I prepare for a colonoscopy?Diet and fluid restrictions are required before having a colonoscopy. You may be asked to limit or eliminate solid foods for a day or so prior to the test. Along with the dietary changes, your bowel must be further cleansed using a bowel prep, which is a substance that triggers bowel-clearing diarrhea, in order for the colonoscopy to be successful.
Why should patients drink Gatorade and Powerade with Miralax Prep?Drinking Gatorade or Powerade replaces vital electrolytes, which are rapidly flushed out of the body during the colon cleansing process. Please do not drink liquids that are blue, red or purple.
If you are diabetic:
- Use sugar free drinks during the prep and monitor your blood sugar closely.
- If you are on insulin, take half of your usual evening dose the day prior to the procedure and also on the morning of the procedure.
- Hold your diabetic medication the morning of the test, if you are not on insulin. If you take Metformin (Glucothage), you should hold this medication for 24 hours prior to the exam.
